With Australian credit card debt at more than $32billion -- it’s no wonder many people are tempted to get their finances back on track by transferring their debt to a credit card with a long interest-free period.

Consolidating your debts into one place with low interest for an extended period can help you reduce your debt, since you won’t be accumulating any additional interest on the debt as you pay it off.

Compare credit cards with 0% interest

Interesting research from a recent Sydney Morning Herald survey found the average date most Aussies will finally get clear of their credit card debt is March 10.  However, it’s likely that many of us will not have cleared our debt this year - and if that’s the case for you it’s important to consider sensible ways of managing your finances.

Government site Moneysmart.gov.au is a great resource for advice and guidance on credit cards, credit and debt.

However, extensions of  long interest-free periods offers on certain cards mean that you can still avoid interest for up to 30 months on the balance you transfer to the new card. We’ve taken a look at what’s available this month:

Do you know of a financial institution who will give a credit card with a limit of $1000? My bank the Heritage Bank who I have been with for 40 odd years - they were just a small building society back then. They say on a pension I can't afford it. I find this nonsense. I just want the card in case of emergency as my family live in Mackay and me in Brisbane and one never knows when I might need to fly up there. Due to mobility problems trains or buses are out.
