The smart way to save on Power Bills that is taking Australia by storm!

Do you ever wake up in the morning and think “I’m selling up and moving somewhere cheaper!” I got to this point recently when I had a bunch of bills come in at once including car rego, electricity, council rates and health insurance.

Managing all of these bills and the fact that they seem to increase every time is just so soul destroying. Energy bills are the #1 cause of stress in most household budgets but I’m sure the others I’ve mentioned aren’t far behind.

But there is a way many of us can save hundreds of dollars and the word is getting out, with the latest AEMO figures for 2018 indicating this year will set a new record for switching energy providers.

In January alone there was a huge 26% year-on-year increase in people changing power companies compared to 2017.

According to Australian Energy Market Operator data, 2017 was the biggest year for switching energy providers with more than 2 million households switching for the first time last year.

That is the equivalent of 229 homes an hour or 4 homes per minute -- and it looks like this year’s numbers are set to be even more dramatic.

There is talk of household power bills rising by another $100 this year, and this flies in the face of what Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg said this week-- he reckons power prices are expected to fall over the next two years.

“The Australian Energy Market Commission forecasts residential electricity prices will fall over the next two years as renewable energy, including small-scale solar supported by the Renewable Energy Target, enters the system,” Mr Frydenberg said.

He also called for electricity retailers to pass on the savings of wholesale energy price falls over the next two years “in full”.

Many of us feel powerless to do anything about energy prices but there are things you can do:

  • Join a consumer group like the FiftyUp Club that uses the strength of our 300,000+ members to encourage the energy retailers to make exclusive special offers.

  • Don’t worry if you’re on a fixed term contract, you can still leave your contract before the end date. Check about any exit or cancellation fees from your current provider. If the discount you’re offered is big enough, you could still be better off switching.

  • Remember it only takes a few minutes to switch online or by phone. From, there your new provider will organise the switch with your current provider with no interruption in your power supply.

  • Sometimes your old provider will make you a better offer once they see you leaving. Whether you leave anyhow or take this new offer, you’ve won!

Just did a survey re the $300 odd rebate pensioners are about to lose. There was a mock letter from an energy company advising us of this and a link provided to work out which providers are the cheapest. I have not received anything either from the government or my provider about the removal of this rebate but did hear something on the news recently. Anyone know just when this is to happen??

I wonder why these companies don't just lower their supply charges instead of offering these increasing discount rates.

I guess that since the link "https://www.fiftyupclub.com/campaigns/fiftyup-club-power-up-save-round-2/energy_plans" no longer works, fiftyup has moved to 9saver with what's his name?

I have investigated other offers for both electricity and gas and found that while many offer a greater discount, their actual cost for both electricity and gas is higher than that of my current supplier. The only way I can see to beat these money grabbing power suppliers is to work towards self-sufficiency. My current place of abode is hamstrung as the winters restrict the efficiency of solar panels and battery storage. We plan to move to an area where there are more sunlight hours throughout the year and we are seriously considering a solar/ battery storage system for electricity and bottled gas for our gas requirements. As a back-up, you stay connected to the grid for electricity. The money grabbing suppliers can go jump.

It's all fine to talk up changing providers but there is no value doing this if you have changed in the last couple of years . And if you have solar the great offer you advocating is a measly 7cents /kWh If you shop around you can getup to 22cents/kwhr However if your solar provides a credit at the end of the billing period they will not give you discount on your imported kwhrs

There are two components to your power bill. No.1. The rates you pay for supply and usage. Do your homework and get the best deal you can find. No.2, The power you use. Switch everything off and only use what you need in the room you're in. Every time you turn a switch on, it costs you money. We cut our main usage by about 30% just by switching off.

Not much point searching for the "better deal" (catch phrase to make you feel like you've won ) when the "better deal" is STILL completely unaffordable !
