BREAKING: GP Co-payments are going, going, gone

GP-copaymentCongratulations, members. You did it!

There are front-page reports today (pictured) confirming what many suspected – that the Federal Government has heeded the concerns of the FiftyUp Club and other groups and shelved its plans for GP co-payments.[1]

As you’ll recall, FiftyUp Club Chairman John Mangos met with Health Minister Peter Dutton in Canberra in August to present the results of a 11,000-member survey on healthcare costs.

The survey showed deep anxiety among over-50s about the soaring costs of keeping well, particularly the impact of co-payments on older Australians and rising health insurance premiums.

Mr Dutton listened to our members’ concerns on co-payments and has now acted with his fellow cabinet ministers to shelve the plans, according to reports today and yesterday.

The apparent backdown on co-payments is a huge win for our members and for all older Australians.

According to member polls, FiftyUp Club members are supportive of reform but are doing it tough, and felt they were being asked to shoulder more than their fair share.

The FiftyUp Club’s healthcare costs survey showed the co-payment plans were a political deal-breaker for many older Australians.

More than two-thirds of FiftyUps surveyed believe the health system is currently unsustainable and are prepared to contribute to reforming it.

However, 30% said the proposed co-payments would force them to avoid the doctor when sick, or go to hospital instead, and could change how they vote.

This result shows the real political power of FiftyUps when they do work together to make their voice heard to policymakers and businesses.

Not agreeing with you doesn't mean that I throw stones, rich 'milked by the system' Colleen (if you drive a car, that is...)...

Yes, yes.... I've just paid the electricity bill, and I do have to call in a repair man for my 45 year old plumbing. After that I'll be ready for a holiday to relieve my stress and increase my longevity! Oh, hang on a minute.... should I be extending my longevity? Won't that just increase the number of bills I'll have to pay? Heck.. you just can't win!!

The figures to substantiate my below comment: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-11-27/oil-prices-continue-to-languish-as-supply-keeps-flowing/5921424 To give you a better idea, when US President G. Bush invaded Iraq, a barrel of crude oil was worth $140, it is now worth $0.72 -roughly half the current price- and WE were paying $1.38 to $1.42 per litre at the pump at the time. So, for God's sake, why would you increase the excise on the CURRENT price of a litre of petrol at the pump when we should pay 90 cents -or less- for a litre of unleaded at that same pump???

Alain
Alain from NSW replied to Alain:

*$72, roughly half that old price

THANK YOU Michael for your rational reasoning... So obvious, yes... To give you all an idea of how low the low lives who govern us are, take for example, the cost of petrol at the pump: based upon the cost the Woolies and Coles of this world are paying for a barrel of crude oil (the cheapest it has ever been, especially after last night OPEC meeting who want crude oil to be even cheaper...) we should pay less than a dollar for one litre of unleaded petrol, but NO, obnoxious Abbott and his cruel team of bigots have implemented the increase of the fuel excise which had been placed on the back burner!!! How much more rip-off schemes (scams) do YOU want from this dodgy government in total chaos (thanks also to Hockey's calculation in the budget, yes, mr Hockey, iron ore is no longer priced at $100 a ton, far far from it, the basis for your inadequate calculations, so guess what? The 'GP/XRay/BloodTest/Etc'... co-payment could come in 'handy', could save your life, could not it? Hence the fascist approach of FORCING it upon us...)...

Unless poor people do not drive cars, of course... If they do, they are being shafted BIG TIME...

The co-payment was and will remain a silly Idea, Whilst employed,we have through our taxes contributed a Medicare levy, should further funds be needed eg rising population increase in costs, then THAT levy should be increased, This government needs to address honesty and proportionate Taxes raised, be spent on that Item , not into general revenue etc, The most successful economies draw social taxes from resources eg mining narrow the gap between Rich and poor, and have a higher percentage of women in the workforce

What about the visit to optometrist? Are they scrapping the eye test only every 3 years rule? How can you pick up eye diseases like glaucoma if people hold back until they eligible? For me eyesight is very important especially if your family history means your susceptible. I could afford $7 but $65 for eye test is not as affordable!
