A big welcome to Melbourne and Queensland listeners

I began working in radio when I was 16. I’m now 53. My dear old dad was in radio sales and after I left school in year 10, he lamented about what was to become of me. I lasted an hour at typing school but clearly had the gift of the gab from a young age, fashioning a microphone from an extension cord with a ball of alfoil on the top.

My first job in radio was reading traffic reports at 2UW in 1980 on the breakfast show. I recall thinking that every person in Sydney would be hanging on every word I said and be ready to phone in their complaints instantly. No one called. Not because I didn’t make a mistake (I made plenty of them including referring to the Harbour Bridge as the Harby Bridge) but because radio is an accompaniment to many people’s lives, background noise to reconnect you each morning with the outside world. The only time a busy listener’s ears might prick up is for the weather so they know whether to pack a brolly or jacket.

In the past 37years I’ve done pretty much every job in a radio station except engineering (I left school in year 10 remember?) and I’ve had such a blessed career. Through radio I have met some wonderful friends, characters, prima-donnas, celebrities and amazing broadcasters. I’ve also been able to do some extraordinary things including hanging out the back of an RAAF Caribou aircraft doing traffic reports and taking part in celebrity car races. I even got to play polo on a camel!

One thing I know for sure. Any job in the media can be fleeting and you never know what is around the corner.

Last year the FiftyUp Club approached me to work with them providing content and hosting a one hour radio show called the Fiftyup Club Show. We launched the show last September on the Talking Lifestyle channel (954AM Sydney) and within 6 months, our one hour slot became two hours and moved into the prime drive-time position of 5-7pm.

Now, after 6 weeks in our new position, I was told the show will, from next Monday February 27, be broadcast into Brisbane and Melbourne as well! Click here to hear a show from this week!

I am so very humbled by this and very grateful to the network, for having such faith in us. What a privilege.

So from next Monday, I look forward to sharing wonderful FiftyUp stories with our club members in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. We haven’t forgotten our other members around the country who can still hear the show online at talkinglifestyle.com.au or listen to our podcasts any time you like!

The show is only as good as the elements within it and, as a Club, you our members have a voice as well. You can call in during the show on 13 12 83 between 5-7pm in NSW or Victoria, and 4-6pm in QLD, or email me with any subjects you’d like us to discuss on the show. My email is kayley@fiftyupclub.com.au. See below for local call signs and more ways to listen
