The Government Could Slash Your Power Bill by Up to $750

Australian energy bills are at an all-time high and they’ve become the number one political issue in the country. A new 400-page report from consumer watchdog the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has recommended 56 changes to the Australian energy market that they say could save Aussie homes up to $750 on their annual bill.

We read the report so you didn’t have to and here are 5 things you need to know.

  1. Loyalty doesn’t pay Switchers benefit most from the current energy market, rather than those who stay loyal to a provider, the ACCC says.
  1. It’s too hard to compare Energy offers, but that could change You’re not alone if you find it hard to compare all those rates and discounts and work out which offer is cheapest. The ACCC agrees.
  1. You need to look at both the discount AND the rates Even if the government enacts all the ACCC’s recommendations, it will take months not weeks, so in the meantime you need to keep looking at both rates and discounts when comparing.
  1. ‘Pay-on-time’ discounts could become a thing of the past These are great if you’re an on-time payer and they can be as high as 30% or even 40% in some cases, but they can act as a penalty for late payers who miss out on the discount and end up paying the full amount.
  1. Reforms could save households $500 to $750 per annum If governments follow through and accept all the ACCC’s recommendations, the watchdog claims they could save us $500 to $750 per annum (25-35 per cent) per household.

“Similarly, small and medium businesses could save $1450-$2250 (30-35 per cent) per year by moving to a standard ‘default’ offer. Currently over 20 per cent of small businesses are on high ‘standing’ offers.”

The government is responsible for arranging the export of Australian gas resources without any safeguards to the adequate supply of gas for domestic use. Why are such policies being allowed and why is there no accounting for the unacceptable impact that those policies have had on the provision of essential services (domestic gas supply) to all Australians. It clearly was implemented for the maximisation of corporate profitability at the expense of domestic needs.

should ask the labour government that implemented it

My understanding is that gas exports were initiated by the Howard government, but whoever it was, They should be held to account and people should make their discontent felt to those responsible. Ultimately, we share the responsibility for not lobbying our politicians to protect the interests of the people. It's an unfortunate fact that governments are "progressing" away from governing for the people in favour of major corporations. We the people are voting these incompetent politicians and the Corporations are benefitting, even though they don't the vote. I can foresee the time when corporations will get the vote and their vote will be worth more than that of you or me.

Yer export gas is worth a pittance we're giving it away it's a national scandal and government officials should be doing time in jail there all frauds and crooks why vote at all it's an insult to our intelegence

Couldn't agree more. But we have to also blame ourselves for voting those idiots in.

Peter from Sydney south. My provider had given me 28% after offering me 22% in a NEW CONTRACT I rang them and ended up getting 32%. So I stayed with them. Origin gave me 30%. Power direct gave me 32%. Almost the same kWh rates. Takes time to shop around if you have it great, definitely need to do your sums. Good Luck.

I recommend that you don't dwell too much on the discount offered. The time will come when the discount expires and unless you're willing to shop around every year or so, you should also look at the "Standard" charges that take effect after the discount period expires.

Electricity prices will not come down unless the Federal Government stops all green subsidies and puts that savings into clean coal powered power stations. Keep up the good work, John Russell, Wahroonga NSW.

The Queensland State Government owns the majority of the generation Power stations, the Same Government owns the infrastructure,They then on sell to the various retailers in the name of Competition? That same Government takes some $413 million in the 2017/2018 financial year from the generation of power, INTO CONSOLIDATED REVENUE? Yet that same Government says that they support small Businesses & want better employment prospects with more jobs? They can't have it both ways!!!!! They also say that they want cheaper power to the consumer??? As I just said they cant have it both ways!!!! Not so cheerful, Bill HINTE. Queensland.

What I would like to know is what happen to the guy in Queensland that wanted to build a Power Station run buy rubbish. A lot of our rubbish gets trucked up north & he wanted to do something about it but again the Government don't want to know about it. Maybe it make's to much sense to kill two birds with one stone, maybe three, we wouldn't need so much land fill.

I live in Central Queensland and the only provider we have is Ergon Energy, so we cannot change our provider. I receive countless marketing calls asking to compare our rates, but the minute I give them my postcode- they usually just hang up.
