The Government Could Slash Your Power Bill by Up to $750

Australian energy bills are at an all-time high and they’ve become the number one political issue in the country. A new 400-page report from consumer watchdog the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has recommended 56 changes to the Australian energy market that they say could save Aussie homes up to $750 on their annual bill.

We read the report so you didn’t have to and here are 5 things you need to know.

  1. Loyalty doesn’t pay Switchers benefit most from the current energy market, rather than those who stay loyal to a provider, the ACCC says.
  1. It’s too hard to compare Energy offers, but that could change You’re not alone if you find it hard to compare all those rates and discounts and work out which offer is cheapest. The ACCC agrees.
  1. You need to look at both the discount AND the rates Even if the government enacts all the ACCC’s recommendations, it will take months not weeks, so in the meantime you need to keep looking at both rates and discounts when comparing.
  1. ‘Pay-on-time’ discounts could become a thing of the past These are great if you’re an on-time payer and they can be as high as 30% or even 40% in some cases, but they can act as a penalty for late payers who miss out on the discount and end up paying the full amount.
  1. Reforms could save households $500 to $750 per annum If governments follow through and accept all the ACCC’s recommendations, the watchdog claims they could save us $500 to $750 per annum (25-35 per cent) per household.

“Similarly, small and medium businesses could save $1450-$2250 (30-35 per cent) per year by moving to a standard ‘default’ offer. Currently over 20 per cent of small businesses are on high ‘standing’ offers.”

They always say "Could" save ..Where is the 'Guarantee' to save. ? They are talking crap. While ENERGY supplies are in the hand of retailers it will never go backwards. The government has no say at the final price charged by Private business.. they cannot REGULATE the market.

Hi Lauire, here is what I replied to Bruce with. Yes Click Energy is engaged in a court battle with the ACCC over the way it has described some of its offers on its own website. At FiftyUp Club, before we select any offer for our 300,000+ members, we undertake a detailed analysis of the combined effect of the discounts and the underlying rates to ensure the offers are highly competitive for on-time payers and since November 2017, FiftyUp Club has also required all Energy offers selected for our members to be expressed as a headline discount off the retailer’s standing offer rates. I hope this helps and if you any further question please reach out to us at contact@fiftyupclub.com

This government won't do ANYTHING at all - now, or in the future. Neither would a Labor government. We are all kidding ourselves. While we all battle it out trying to pay our bills, the ultimate aim of the governments and companies, all of which are ripping us off, the members of parliament and the executives of the companies are all enjoying personal perks and will continue to do so UNLESS we can either find honest politicians (some chance) or replace the current political parties. Don't hang by your neck waiting for a positive outcome.

The answer is simple. Pull out of the Paris agreement and have the Government build or financially underwrite new coal fired power stations. Note that without coal we could not have steel or concrete. Ask where would the power come from in a defence emergency?

Why is there No competition for electricity in Western Australia?

There is no estimate savingz for WA Why

I live in WA and we have no choice with only one electricity supplier. Therefore we have to pay their rates, it is so annoying when we see the options the other states have. About 8 years we installed solar panels and since then our bills have been minimal, Brilliant! Brenda.

Here, the operative words are "Could" and "Up To" which are marketing speak for "maybe something will happen" - but will it? Hmmm... I'm not holding my breath! Who will firstly read and secondly fully understand the 400 page report and all the statistics and all the implications and all the recommendations? Perhaps a report on the report will be commissioned before any watered down action is taken.
