3 Easy Steps to Help You Connect to the NBN

Is the NBN in your area or coming soon? Whether it’s there or not, FiftyUp Club has compiled a simple guide to help you understand how to connect when you do need to.

CHECK IF NBN IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR AREA

This one is more straightforward than many people may realise. You don’t have to wait for a letter informing you that the NBN is now available in your area, you can simply jump online and head to nbnco.com.au. You can type in your address and see straight away if the NBN is connected in your area yet. If it isn’t available, you may want to sign up to receive an email alert from nbnco.com.au letting you know when it is.

CONSIDER WHAT YOU NEED

Everyone’s circumstances are different, so don’t forget that if you have specific equipment in your home, such as medical alarms, monitored fire alarms, etc, you’ll need to check with your the provider of your device as to whether connecting to the NBN will affect them. Plus, if your property has any additional outbuildings, such as a granny flat, it’s worth investigating whether you’ll need to extend your connection from your primary property to these buildings.

Also, whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, if you’re planning to move soon it’s worth checking whether your new property will be connected to NBN. If you’re going to be a renter, you may need to contact your landlord before you go ahead and connect to a plan.

PICK A PROVIDER AND PLAN

This is where you can really benefit from shopping around. There are now dozens of providers on the market offering very similar NBN plans, for dramatically different prices. Recent analysis from Mozo has shown that the pricing difference between NBN plans offering extremely similar speeds and services can vary hugely. So much so that the analysis indicated that by being on the best NBN plan you could save as much as $736 a year.

Rather than sticking with your current provider, see if you can get a better deal by switching to a new provider when you take up the NBN.

NBN keep on changing their connection date without an explanation. Initial connection was due in April 2017, latest date March 2019. Who can I contact to obtain an explanation?

I believe you have 18 months to connect once the line is in the street. So don't rush.

Prices keep coming down. I would wait 1 month before nbn needs to be connected.
